For too long, we've been forced to read about in underground magazines like Stuff, and perhaps whisper about during secret meetings at Circuit City. But finally, someone has come along and dared to publicly put Men's Needs on the table. It feels good just to type it. Yes, what about Men's Needs?!?
Those someones are Wakefield, England's The Cribs, whose third album, Men's Needs, Women's Needs, Whatever, looks to tear this forbidden subject wide open. Especially the first single which tackles Men's Needs head-on.
Franz Ferdinand's Alex Kapranos gets his first production credit with Men's Needs, Women's Needs, Whatever and tweaks the Cribs' sound just enough to make it sound new while still allowing room for the Jarman brothers' signature Whoa-Ohs and catchy choruses.
And, so what have we learned about Men's Needs? Not much. I can't understand the lyrics, apart from the title and the Whoa-ohs. But what singer-guitarist Ryan Jarman really needs is a new shirt so I never have to see him play in that stretchy red-and-white cyclist top ever again.

I just worked on this video this past Sunday. I snapped a lot of pics while I was "severing" Ryan's head and Ross' arm. Very violent and funny shoot. We shot in Hollywood at the Source stages.

Hi. I found your blog last year and really enjoy it - I like a lot of what you like (I really like Sloan) and you have led me to a lot of music I was previously unfamiliar with. A quick question: would it be possible to add a search function to your blog? I often want to go back to hear something from some months back and I have to search through the archives.
Best,
A satisfied reader
ps - If you're interested, you should check out John Lennox, the singer/songwriter I currently play with, at www.johnlennox.com (no myspace account unfortunately - it got hacked).

Hey, check out this video interview SPIN magazine did with The Cribs and Alex Kapranos back in January when they were
finishing the mixing of "Men's Needs, Women's Needs, Whatever," in NYC. Here's the link: www.spin.com/video/2007/04/070409_cribs/
The new album is to be released May 21st in the UK on Wichita and now on July 10th in the US, their Warner Brothers debut. Gotta love those Jarmans!
