One of my most-anticipated albums of the year has got to be Fields' full-length debut, Everything Last Winter, due April 2 in the UK. This neo-shoegaze five-piece ("nu-gaze"? Did I just coin something horrible? Alert the NME!) blew me away when I saw them last fall at Mercury Lounge -- I mean that somewhat literally. They were so loud you could feel it in your chest. In a good way.
The band recorded Everything Last Winter with veteran producer Michael Beinhorn and it seems he has done a pretty good job of capturing the pretty and the fury that Fields posess on-stage without making them sound too glossy. The first taste was last year's "If You Fail We All Fail" (which made my Best Singles of 2006 list) and now comes the album's lead-up single, "Charming the Flames" which is even better. The harmonies are dense, the guitars roar, the chorus soars -- yet you can still hear the bells tinkling in the background. Superb.

I wish I could be as complimentary towards the song's video but, apart from some lovely cinematography, it's rather dull to these eyes.
While we're waiting for the new album, if you haven't yet, you should pick up Fields' 7 from the Village.
An aside: Is it just me or is 2007 shaping up to be a banner year for music or what? I could probably compile a Top 10 list right now that I would not be ashamed of. LCD Soundsystem, Klaxons, Aqueduct, the Rakes, Field Music, Arcade Fire... here's hoping the second half of the year is equally as fertile.
Well well well... Not bad, not bad... Can better? ;)
